A Note from the Mayor
Once again, we had a wonderful Memorial Day Ceremony at the Maumelle Veterans Memorial at Lake Willastein on May 28. As in previous years, we were honored to have the Arkansas Fallen Heroes Memorial “Field of Flags” on display. One hundred forty-five flags and plaques represent the sacrifice of lives for the many freedoms that you and I experience each and every day. If you attended the event, thank you for honoring the members of the Armed Services, who died protecting the liberties and freedoms that we all enjoy in the United States of America! We honored the Gold Star Families who were present, and several Gold Star Family Members participated in the program. It was a very memorable event.
The arrival of summertime in the City of Maumelle has officially arrived with the opening of the swimming pool at the Dowell Naylor Aquatic Center! The pool opened on May 26. If you have not joined the pool, memberships are still available. It is a great way to beat the summer heat and to have fun with the family! May is going to be one of the hottest Mays on record. I hope this is not an indication of a HOT summer; however, it is great to be able to cool off in our community pool.
As you plan your summer vacations, be sure to contact the Maumelle Police Department to conduct a vacation check on your house, while you are gone. An officer will check your residence on a daily basis to make sure your house is secure. Officers will not feed your pets or water your plants, so you need to ask a friend to do that. Have fun on your vacation, knowing that our officers are monitoring your home routinely. Click here to view the Residence Check Sheet. All of the area schools are dismissed for the summer. Please be aware that there will be more children playing outside in the neighborhoods and public areas. We all need to drive cautiously through these areas.
The Children's Protection Center will be holding the 2018 River Cities Dragon Boat Festival at Lake Willastein on June 15 and 16. This is a great family event, and we look forward to hosting it again this year. The music will start at 7 pm on Friday night with a fireworks show at dark. The racing will begin at 8:00 am on Saturday. During races, there will be a number of activities for you to enjoy onshore, including a DJ, food trucks, and a children’s activity area. Come out and watch the competition! The Children’s Protection Center (CPC) is a non-profit, child advocacy and safety center that helps abused children.
If you have questions or comments about anything that is happening in the City, please contact us. We want to help you stay informed about your community. I look forward to seeing more and more of our residents at City Council meetings, Planning Commission meetings and other public forums.
