1. How do I participate in curbside recycling?

Please call 851-2812 and request a recycle bin. We deliver those within 1-3 days from the time you make a request.

2. Is there a charge to recycle?

No, it does not cost to recycle.

3. What happens to my recycling?

Recycling is collected by City crews. The City tips the recyclables at Recycle America in Little Rock, AR.

4. Can I collect my recyclable materials in brown paper bags?

Yes!  If you want to continue sorting your materials in brown bags, that is fine.  Simply put all of the brown bags inside your bin.  Please do not place plastic bags (full or empty) in your blue bin.  Plastic bags get tangled in machine gears at the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) requiring the MRF to stop operations to remove the bags.  

You may collect your recycling in plastic bags, but you must dump the recyclables out of the plastic bag into the bin and place the plastic bag in the garbage or take it to a Kroger Store or another participating grocery store for recycling.

5. What types of items can be placed in the recycling bin?

Please refer to the information shown above under "Materials Accepted Curbside for Recycling."

6. Why did the program change?

Maumelle residents spoke and we listened. It took time to negotiate and to find a way we could start collecting more at curbside without increasing the community fees to offset the cost to pay an outside company.

7. I'm moving, should I take my recycling bin with me?

No. Just like the garbage cart, these recycling bins are the property of the City of Maumelle. Do not take them with you when you move. Each bin is assigned to a specific property using serial numbers.

8. What if I want a bigger bin?

We don't have larger bins at the moment. We are trying to get a participation rate and to verify there will be a need for it.

9. Why is glass not one of the items collected in the program?

We do not accept glass because of employee safety (avoiding injury) and contamination issues (breakage within the collection vehicles can cause glass shards to end up in the other materials, which may cause the rejection of loads). 

Historically, glass has been the smallest amount of recyclables collected, and there has been a significant decline in the last few years, as many bottlers have turned to plastic. Also, the glass markets have been and continue to be depressed, so economics are also a factor.  Recycle America does not allow us to collect glass curbside and tip at their facility without incurring an additional cost.
